How to file ITR?

An income tax return is a form filed to report the annual income of an individual. It can be various reasons for filing an income tax return even if there is no income. An individual wants to file his ITR for reporting his income for a financial year, carrying forward losses, claiming an income tax refund and tax deductions etc. An income tax return is a form of an individual’s income, expenses, tax deductions, investments and taxes declarations. After the Income Tax Act, 1961, it is mandatory to file an income tax return. The Income Tax Department provides the facility for electronic filing (e-filing) of an income tax return. Prerequisites:
Calculation of Income and Tax
Individual will be required to calculate his/her income, include income from all sources such as salary, freelancing and interest income. An individual can claim the deductions such as tax-saving investments under section 80C and so on. Also, an individual should take into account credit for TDS, TCS or any advance tax paid by them.
Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) Certificates and Form 26AS
Individual should sumarize his TDS amount from the TDS certificates for all the all quarters of the financial year. You can refer Form 26AS for TDS and tax paid during the financial year.

Choose the right Income Tax return Form
You have to choose the ITR Form which is applicable for you. After choosing the ITR form, the you can proceed with the filing of the income tax return.

Mode of income tax return filing
Two modes of income tax return filing- Online and offline.

The online mode from individual’s login is available only for ITR 1 and ITR 4; not available for forms of other categories of individual taxpayers. The offline mode is available for all types of income tax forms.
Offline ITR filing:

Download ITR utility from Income Tax Portal.
Visit the site income tax e-filing portal and click on ‘IT Return Preparation Software’ option on the right menu. Choose the assessment year and download the offline utility software, i.e. Microsoft Excel or Java utility based on your choice.

Fill in your details in the Downloaded File
Fill in the relevant details of your income, and check the tax payable or the refundable as per the calculations of the utility upon downloading the offline utility. The details of income tax challan can be filled in the downloaded form.

Validate the ‘data entered’.
There are a few buttons on the right-hand side of the downloaded form. Click on the ‘Validate’ button to ensure all the required data is filled.

Convert the file to XML Format
After successfully validating, to convert the file into XML file format, click on the ‘Generate XML’ button.

Now, log in to the income tax web portal  click on the ‘e-File’ tab and select the ‘Income Tax Return’ option. Provide the details such as PAN, assessment year, ITR form number, and the submission mode.

Remember to choose the option ‘Upload XML’ from the ‘Submission Mode’ drop down.

Now attach XML file and click on the ‘Submit’ button. Choose verification mode—Aadhaar OTP, electronic verification code (EVC), or sending manually signed copy of ITR-V to CPC, Bengaluru.


Online ITR filing

Go to the Income Tax e-Filing web portal, income tax return portal
Login on e-Filing web portal by user ID (PAN), Password, Captcha code and click ‘Login’.Click on the ‘e-File’ menu and click ‘Income Tax Return’ link On Income Tax Return tab.

PAN will be auto-populated
a) Select ‘Assessment Year’
b) Select ‘ITR Form Number’
c) Select ‘Filing Type’ as ‘Original/Revised Return’
d) Select ‘Submission Mode’ as ‘Prepare and Submit Online’

Click on ‘Continue’

Note : Click on ‘Save Draft’ button periodically to save the entered ITR details as a draft ,To avoid loss of data/rework due session time out

Read the Instructions carefully

Fill General Information.     
PAN, NAME, ADDHAR, DOB, EMAIL, MOBILE NO, ADDRESS, NATURE OF EMPLOYMENT, FILL u/s 139(i) on or before due date if you are filing on time

Now select COMPUTATION OF INCOME AND TAX tab
fill all financial data as per your form 16 (salary, HRA Claim or Rent paid ,Income from other source, Investment details, health insurance premium, Interest on loan taken for higher education, interest on house loan,)
HRA Exemption and rent paid Rules

Check Total Tax paid tab(Amount payable, Refund etc.)

Enter bank details in which you want your refund.
Now select ‘Taxes Paid and Verification
tab and Choose the appropriate Verification option. Choose any one of the following option to verify the Income Tax Return:
a) I would like to e-Verify
b) I would like to e-Verify later within 120 days from date of filing.
c) I don’t want to e-Verify and would like to send signed ITR-V through normal or speed post within 120 days from date of filing.
Select capacity as Self, enter place and Click on ‘Preview and Submit’ button, Verify all the data entered in the ITR.
’Submit’ the ITR.

On Choosing ‘I would like to e-Verify’ option, e-Verification can be done through any of the following methods by entering the EVC/OTP when asked for.
EVC generated through bank ATM or Generate EVC option under My Account Aadhaar OTP
Prevalidated Bank Account
Prevalidated Demat Account
On Choosing the other two verification options, the ITR will be submitted but the process of filing the ITRs is not complete until it is verified.

The EVC/OTP should be entered within 60 seconds else, the Income Tax Return (ITR) will be auto-submitted. The submitted ITR should be verified later by using ‘My Account > e-Verify Return’ option or by sending signed ITR-V to CPC BANGALORE.

This the second extension of the ITR filing last date for FY2019-20. As the government announced on 24 Oct 20, “In order to provide more time to taxpayers for filling their ITR, it’s been decided to further extend the last date of Income-Tax Returns filing as under mentioned: Last date of tax returns (ITR) filing for these individuals [for whom the Last date (i.e. before the extension by the said notification dated 24 Jun 20 as per the Act was 31July 20] has been extended to 31 Dec 20.
